Working with experimental "Silver Shade" Polaroid film with a vintage SX-70 camera completely changed the look and feel of my still life work. The new medium forced less perfectly placed, looser compositions. The title, Twice Removed, refers to the printmaking sequence--Polaroid to negative to platinum print on vellum. The small imperfections and accidents through each generation become essential to the final image, reflecting the original themes of mortality and loss, as well as a fascination with natural history prints, silent film, birds, the botanical photographs of Charles Jones, and my own collection of 19th-century ambrotypes and daguerreotypes.
