During intermission and snatches of time before and after performances, John Martin took painterly photographs, each one in just a matter of minutes. They were moments captured between suicide and conflagration, after near-rape and murder. The singers and musicians are still in their full makeup and costumes, still charged with adrenaline and drama, exuding the traits of their character, be they tragic or demented, lost or villainous, or even hilarious.
