These photographs are part of a series of images taken at a cemetery in Colma, CA. A weedy, neglected area has been set aside for the poor, who were buried in a humble manner that most likely typified their lives. Each time I visited this place, I couldn't help thinking about both the inequality and transience of life. But I paid more attention to the uniqueness and beauty of the grave markers and how each was slowly, inexorably surrendering to the elements.
I shot these images using a plastic Holga camera, which produces a softness and darkness around the edge that seem to mirror the graceful fading away of these headstones and markers.
